Announcements

  • Mon Mar 10 08:34:37 EET 2025 — We have forwarded all interview / eligibility enquiries to the Admissions office. Please send any future enquiries to them. We also keep receiving inquiries about the correct answer to exercise 3 directory permission. Well it's ACL x only for the required user only; no other permissions should have been present (apart from owner).

  • Tue Mar 4 09:02:25 EET 2025 — Applicants who submitted their exercise 4 answers to a non-main branch have got regraded. Apart from that, we haven't found any significant new issues. Those who make it to the interviews will receive information about the Candour identification process in connection with the interview invitation.

  • Tue Feb 25 10:18:09 EET 2025 — We have checked all emails and all issues therein. Some applicants claim full points from exercise 4, but either we don't find the separate file with the decrypted data, or then the answer isn't calculated correctly. (If my answer is wrong, then ChatGPT must be wrong as well, which I don't believe.) The using another branch as main in exercise 4, problems with exercise 2 answer file format, and exercise 3 grading still wrong issues were addressed before already (see announcement below on Fri Feb 21 14:03:37 EET 2025).

  • Mon Feb 24 10:00:54 EET 2025 — Fixed error in exercise 4 grading. Points updated. New stats:

    • average 37, median 42
    • 145 got at least 45
    • 130 got at least 46
    • 120 got at least 47
    • 73 got at least 48
    • 61 got at least 49
    • 57 got at least 50.
  • Fri Feb 21 14:03:37 EET 2025 — Questions and answers:

    • Why didn't I get points from my exercise 4, although I created a project etc? We can access your project only if the jamk-it-test-user was added successfully to your project. Otherwise, we only have our server logs from exrc-04.html etc. to work with.
    • I pushed exercise 4 to master branch instead of main. We can take that into consideration but we won't make an official recalculation of points.
    • Can I see how the correct answer for exercise 4 was calculated? No.
    • I answered exercise 2 but my answer was not considered. The contents of your text file was something else than what was asked in the instructions. We can take this into consideration but we won't make an official recalculation of points.
    • I claim that the grading of my exercise 3 is still wrong. No it's not. We have checked all the cases (30 emails or so). The correct answer used ACL permissions. One applicant had used ACL permissions but had a typo in the directory name.
    • I claim that the grading of my exercise 4 is wrong. We start looking into these next and report about the results here on Mon Feb 24. Stay tuned.
  • Thu Feb 20 07:51:10 EET 2025 — Fixed error in exercise 3 directory permissions check. Points updated. New stats:

    • average 37, median 42
    • 133 got at least 45
    • 81 got at least 47
    • 73 got at least 48
    • 14 got at least 49
    • 11 got at least 50.
  • Wed Feb 19 15:14:34 EET 2025 — Points available here. Some comments:

    • 520 mails were sent on Feb 3, and 402 attempted the exam
    • among the 402, the average total points was 36 and the median was 41
    • eight people got full 50 points
    • 130 people got at least 45 points.
  • What happens next:
    • the admissions services start doing the eligibility checks
    • we start thinking about who to invite for the interviews
    • this page stays active as needed.
  • Please double check your points against the grading criteria (on the main page) and let us know if something needs to be fixed. Thank you!

  • Mon Feb 17 00:12:43 EET 2025 — The deadline has passed and the exam is closed. Stay tuned for points on Wed Feb 19. Thank you!

  • Sun Feb 16 23:10:49 EET 2025 — The deadline is near! Here's how it is scheduled:

    • Sun Feb 16 23:30:00 EET 2025 — last exercise 4 generation
    • Mon Feb 17 00:01:00 EET 2025 — linux server shutdown
    • Mon Feb 17 00:01:00 EET 2025 — html pages (exrc_02.html etc.) replaced with 'closed' message
    • Mon Feb 17 00:01:00 EET 2025 — gitlab projects listed
    • Mon Feb 17 00:02:00 EET 2025 — gitlab projects download start.

Once the gitlab projects have downloaded (after a few minutes or so), the exam is closed for good. No late submissions are accepted.

  • Thu Feb 13 09:36:43 EET 2025 — We stil get many questions that are answered either in the documentation (e.g. how to obtain / submit / solve the exercises) or further below (e.g. the server overrides my home directory permissions, please help). However, here are two loose ends:

    • Should I use banker's rounding or standard rounding? Both are correct.
    • I have done all the exercises, could you please verify my submission? No. Just wait until Feb 19.
  • Mon Feb 10 13:52:13 EET 2025 — Please note that it's possible to reset Exercises 4 generation here, as stated in our front page.

  • Fri Feb 7 14:23:10 EET 2025 — Many of the emails we receive are questions that are answered in the documentation, or issues that we think one should be able to solve without our help. We will not address them here.

  • Thu Feb 6 09:59:09 EET 2025 — A clarification regarding exercise 3. A server cron job (i.e. automated script) changes the home directory posix permissions to 750 (server default) each 10 minutes. This is in order to get you back in if you permission yourself out. So the script overrides any home directory permissions that you have set with chmod. But the script should not override any acl permissions. Also, the default group posix permission 5 should not make any real difference regarding the exercise (even though zero would be more stylish), because each user belongs only to a group with one member (the user).

  • Wed Feb 5 09:48:27 EET 2025 — Exercise 2 README.md file contained an incorrect link address for submission. Corrected.

  • Tue Feb 4 17:14:23 EET 2025 — Please use a precision of two decimal places in your numerical answers to exercises 2 and 4.

  • Mon Feb 3 15:27:04 EET 2025 — Linux test users added. :)

  • Mon Feb 3 08:26:51 EET 2025 — Opening emails sent.
